Twenty years ago, at the beginning of the human genome project and the rise of bioinformatics, Francis Collins, the director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), forecasted that by 2020 we would have the ability to predict the presence of the 25 most common diseases through predictive tests. He also anticipated that the diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses would improve as a result.
Do you believe that this prediction has been realized? Have the expectations been met? If not, could the cause be technical challenges or are there other underlying factors at play?
